Junior Team Scores
The Ottawa Sportsman's Club Junior Pistol Team performed a clean sweep to defeat five other teams and become the 2003 Junior Pistol champions at the National Rifle and Pistol Matches in July at Camp Perry, Ohio.
The team took High Junior honors in .22 rimfire, centerfire, and .45-caliber matches to bring the first such title home to the Upper Peninsula. The team also took first place in the Marksman Class, which included adult teams.
In an act of sportsmanship, Ottawa team member Ben Seppala volunteered to shoot for a Detroit area club that arrived one member short. Seppala promised his coach, Ron Granroth, to shoot his best even if it might mean the defeat of his home team. Other junior teams came from New Jersey, Texas, and Massachusetts.
Jeff Tuomi of the Ottawa club finished second overall in the Marksman Class and was High Junior Marksman. Teammates Kurt Szyszkoski finished fifth and Sam Gardner ninth. All three earned the Red Jacket and Cap and a berth on the NRNUSA National Civilian Pistol Team.
