OSC 2005 Jr Shooting Team Biographies:
Cal is one of our newer shooters and is the son of Bob and Mary Gardner of Pelkie. He will be a "home schooled" junior next fall. Like his brother, Cal is active in 4-H, the Boy Scouts and plays soccer and basketball. He is also very involved in the Copper Country Robotics competition. Cal attended our 2003 shooting camp, and has been shooting with the team for about a year now. He is making good progress and we're looking forward to Cal developing into a top-notch marksman.
Jeff is the son of Bob and Suzy Tuomi of Chassell. He graduated with honors from Chassell High School, class of '04 and is finishing up a year of studying Biological Science at MTU. He will enroll this fall in the Radiology program at Marquette General. Besides being one of our top shooters and Team Leaders, Jeff is an athlete and enjoys playing basketball and golfing. He works for his Dad's construction business (T-Square Carpentry) and has done volunteer work at Portage hospital.
Joe is the son of Jay and Dorothy Ruohonen of Atlantic Mine. He is an honor student at Jeffers High School, and will attend Michigan Tech, studying Mechanical Engineering on an Army ROTC scholarship this fall. In high school, Joe has been active in ROTC, Cross Country running and Track, and has been on the downhill Ski Team, doing very well in the giant slalom. Joe attended our 2002 shooting camp and started shooting with the team last summer. Practicing 3 times a week, Joe has made great progress and we expect him to do very well this summer.
Mark is the son of Gary and Carol Saari from Chassell. He graduated with honors from Chassell High School, class of '04, and is currently finishing up his first year as an engineering student at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. Mark attended the OSC Junior shooting-sports camp in 2000 and has been shooting with the team since 2002. Although he was unable to attend the Nationals in '04, he is looking forward to getting to Camp Perry this year. We're looking forward to Mark being one of our top shooters at Camp Perry this year. Besides shooting, Mark enjoys working on cars and riding his "crotch rocket".
Matt is the son of Mike and Gail Kocher of Mass City. He is a freshman at Ontonagon High School, is active with his Church and is very busy in 4-H, participating in 4-H's horse quiz bowl. In addition to helping out on the farm, Matti enjoys hunting, playing soccer and acting with the Mass area theatrical group. At age 14 Matti is the newest and youngest member of our team. He attended our 2004 shooting camp, and after watching him shoot one of our older team members said "He does everything perfect!" We'll expect a lot of him in the future!
Pat is the son of Chris and Cindy Miller of Atlantic Mine. He is an honor student at Houghton High School, and will be a Senior this fall. A dedicated football player on Houghton's varsity and a hurdler on the track team, Pat has also been active in 4-H and helps out on his family's hobby farm. Patrick was the "top overall shooter" at our 2003 shooting camp, and has been shooting with the team since. Currently one of our "top four" shooters, we expect great results from him at this year's Nationals.
One of our top shooters, Sam is the son of Bob and Mary Gardner of Pelkie. A home schooled student he graduated last year and is finishing up his freshman year studying forestry at Michigan Tech. Outside of school, Sam has been very active in the Boy Scouts, earning his EAGLE Scout designation in 2003. He is also an avid soccer player, snow boarder and BMX biker. He became a "wolf tracker" participating in the DNR's wolf survey this past year. Following up on that, Sam will be employed this summer at Isle Royale, monitoring their wolf population.
Tom is the son of Carl and Denise Daavetilla of Chassell. An honor student at Chassell High School, Tom will be a Junior this fall. Tom runs Cross Country, is on the Basketball Team and the Golf Team. He attended the 2004 shooting camp and was our "Top Pistol Shooter". Tommy started shooting with the team this past winter and we can see "championship potential" in his progress. He, along with Matt, will attend the National Junior Pistol Camp while at Camp Perry, as well as work as our team managers. Tom will be a tremendous asset to us as we lose our older shooters
